The Argentine National Institute of Tourism Promotion will be present at both the Barclays Scottish Open (9th-12th July – at Loch Lomond) and the traditional British Open Championship (16th – 19th July at Turnberry) hosting a programme of activities especially designed to promote Argentina as a leading golfing destination in South America. Among those activities, there will have a promotional stand in the main golf village at the Scottish Open and advertising of www.argentina.travel along the 4 days of the tournament. At the British Open, just two days before the starting on the 14th July, there will be a special event for the press with some of our players at Turnberry hosted by the Golf Attache of the Argentine Tourist Board, Susan Marples, for a selected group of journalists and operators.

With the largest number of golf courses in any South American country, Argentina offers 300 golf courses, for every player and taste, 138 of which are in Buenos Aires alone, and 15 premium golf-courses currently being built ( some of them design by Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Greg Norman , Mark Adams, etc). Golf is fast becoming both a national phenomenon, with more than 100,000 players in Argentina, and an increasingly popular attraction for international tourists, thanks to the quality of the golf courses, and the combination of the “After Golf”, with scenery’s and beautiful places to visit around the country, our wine, culture and gastronomy. Golf is becoming a very popular tourism attraction for international visitors, especially for British golfers as the style and concept of the clubs and courses has English heritage. The Hurlingham Club in Buenos Aires was one of the first golf courses in Argentina in the XIX century.

Golf is one of the fastest-growing tourism niches in Argentina, and the UK is one of the leading markets in the sector for the country. Susan Marples, from the National Institute of Tourism Promotion, says “We are delighted to have institutional presence at the Barclays Scottish Open 2009, to show the great infrastructure, beautiful landscape and fantastic courses that Argentina has to offer. It will be a unique opportunity for us to have direct contact with a great number of spectators that play golf to encourage them to visit our country. We are going to hold meetings with UK tour operators and golf agencies to develop our alliances within this sector further”.

The UK is one of the top priority markets for the awareness-strategy of Argentina in its international marketing campaign. The growth in British tourist arrivals to Argentina has been constant from 2003 to 2008, being up more than 70 per cent in 2008 in comparison to 2003.

From the mountains of Salta in the north of the country, through Buenos Aires and right down to the end of the world in southern Patagonia, Argentina has a golf course to suit everybody. Whether a businessman in Buenos Aires with half a day to spare, or a more adventurous golfer looking to play some of the most breathtaking and best kept courses in the world, Argentina can cater for all tastes and abilities.
